The Turkey Trot to Kerrville, 2001!

Turkey Trot with our extended family!  What a great way to spend our Thanksgiving weekend!  We had 16 bikes depart that cool and dry Thursday morning from the IHOP at 290 and Hwy 6 around 9am.  We proceeded out 529 through Bellville and on out 159 to LaGrange. From there we took 609 to Muldoon, where we traveled down one short 1.5 mile DIRT road.....SORRY did not know it was dirt!!!! After stopping on the other side of the dirt road to give everyone a chance to razz Lance, we proceeded into San Marcos for Turkey Lunch at Furrs Cafeteria. We filled up and gassed up, then headed out the Devils Backbone to 473, and on into Kerrville for the night. We cleaned up and had a little party on the patio out back of Pinkies Place, then on to the bar for some Food, Drink and oh yes…Dancing!!  (As a note I have change the route for future trips to avoid this dirt road!!)

All gassed up and filled up first thing in the AM on Friday with 17 bikes going out.  The day started very cool.  We took the back country roads to Llano.  Lots of cattle crossings, cattle pies, stream crossings, and animals.  We had lunch at the world famous Coopers BBQ, stuffing our tummies with ribs, pork, and cobbler.  It was very warm and we peeled off our leathers before heading down to Willow City Loop for more cattle crossings and cow pies…..and a stop at Harry's for refreshments.  Then it was off to Luchenbach for some good ole live picking and grinning in the backyard.  We left Luchenbach and rode back to Kerrville on old Grapetown Rd. to Old San Antonio Rd (Old Tunnel hwy).  What a great ride that was!  After wiping off the road grime, we all settled back on the hotel patio and had a pizza party till the rain and wind chased us to the Bar!!

On Saturday we started a little earlier and headed out west with 23 bikes.  We went through Hunt, of course stopping at the General Store for some jerky, then on out to 187. At 187, we rode south down to Utopia and then over to Leakey, where we stopped for gas.  We then headed up north on 335 on top of the mountain ridges to 41. From 41, we headed down south on 336, through a Road Closed sign.  We knew it would be OK because Emerson had scouted the route the day before. Emerson was right…..not too bad, just some loose gravel where the road was washed out…..hell after the 1.5 mile dirt road on Thursday, this was a piece of cake!  We rolled into Camp Wood and came upon a sign that said 337 was closed due to high water with the crossing being washed out.  Emerson told us about this section too, so we proceeded onward through the cow patties. Well…this wash out was a little deep, but all made it through except Patrick.  He decided he wanted to go boating and catch some fish!!!! After the excitement of the bike swimming, we headed on out to 16, where we caught it north into Kerrville through the steep grade switchbacks that are SOOOO FUN at dusk!!!  What a trooper that Cindy Rodriguez is!  For food, we hitched a ride in a van driven by the owner of Inn of the Hills, who took us down to the Cowboy Steak House for some true Texas Beef!! Some of us then went shopping at WalMart to buy Patrick a few accessories for his bike – the reward for fishing.  We all returned to the Bar again for dancing and even a few lessons for Lance, by our very own professional dance instructor, Buffy. No, he does not listen well!!!!   (As a note I do not normally take groups through such crossing, this was unusual as we had heavy rain the weeks before, normally these roads are very dry and some of the best riding in Texas!!)

Sunday, we headed out to the Gristmill in Gruene for lunch, taking all back roads and even seeing one old Navy Jet parked in a cow pasture!  After lunch, we decided to try old Hwy 90 for our route home and a good choice it was, not a lot of traffic!
